Short answer

Get medical advice for buttock pain that persists or worsens, or that is joined by weakness, fever, injury, or bladder changes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common movement triggers
Stairs, long strides, turning in bed, or rising from a chair
Urgent warning signs
Major injury, fever, new weakness, saddle numbness, or bladder and bowel loss

Understanding the pattern

Buttock Pain is a common presentation of Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction. The sacroiliac joints connect the pelvis with the base of the spine and transfer load during standing, walking, and turning. Pain is often felt on one side near the dimples of the lower back and may increase with stairs, long strides, rolling in bed, or moving from sitting to standing. Pain that is steadily present at rest, accompanied by widespread numbness, or linked with marked leg weakness needs assessment for other causes.

What to do

Keep gentle movement within a comfortable range and change position regularly. Avoid sudden heavy lifting and note whether stairs, single-leg loading, or prolonged sitting brings symptoms on. A physiotherapist can examine the pelvis, hip, and lumbar spine because nearby structures can produce similar buttock pain.

Red flags that need prompt care

Seek urgent care after a fall or collision if walking or weight-bearing is difficult. Arrange prompt medical assessment for fever, a hot swollen area, rapidly escalating pain, unexplained general illness, new leg weakness, saddle numbness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These findings should not be assumed to come from sacroiliac joint dysfunction.

Questions for your appointment

Ask how the sacroiliac joint will be distinguished from the hip or lower spine as the pain source. Ask which movements to practise, which loads to pause, and what neurological changes should trigger emergency care.

Questions people ask

Can sacroiliac joint dysfunction cause one-sided buttock pain?

Yes. Pain near one sacroiliac joint may be felt mainly in one buttock and can change with pelvic loading or position.

Should fever with buttock pain be checked?

Yes. Fever or a hot swollen area is not a routine mechanical pattern and warrants prompt medical assessment.
