When to Worry About Easy Bruising With Sun-Damaged Skin

Easy Bruising is a common presentation of Sun-Damaged Skin. Long-term ultraviolet exposure can leave skin thinner and more fragile, particularly on exposed areas such as the backs of the hands and forearms. Minor bumps may then break small blood vessels under the skin, leaving purple, red, or brown marks.

Bruising can also relate to medicines, supplements, platelet or clotting problems, nutritional issues, or another health condition. Note where bruises appear, whether you remember an injury, and whether they fade as expected.

Protect exposed skin with clothing and broad-spectrum sunscreen, and reduce knocks around the home and during activities. Moisturise regularly and avoid picking at bruises. Do not stop a prescribed blood-thinning medicine without medical advice. Photograph a new or changing bruise with the date so a clinician can compare its progress.

Arrange a review when bruises appear without a clear bump, keep recurring, spread quickly, or occur with nosebleeds, bleeding gums, unusually heavy bleeding, fever, or marked weakness. Seek urgent care for a severe headache after an injury, uncontrolled bleeding, or a rapidly enlarging painful swelling. A new sore, scaly patch, or non-healing area on sun-damaged skin also warrants examination.
