When to worry about breast skin changes with breast cancer

Breast skin can change because of irritation, infection, injury, hormonal effects, or other breast conditions. Cancer can also alter the skin by affecting tissue beneath it or the lymphatic drainage of the breast. Appearance alone cannot identify the cause, so an examination is needed for a new persistent change.

Compare the change with the other breast and note when it began, whether it is spreading, and whether there is pain, a lump, discharge, or nipple change. Do not rely on repeated self-checking to settle the question. Arrange an appointment with a clinician who can examine the breast and decide whether tests are needed.

Seek prompt assessment for skin that becomes dimpled, thickened, orange-peel-like, persistently red, swollen, ulcerated, or newly tethered, or for a nipple that turns inward. A rapidly changing breast, bloody discharge, or a new lump also needs timely review. Fever with warmth and redness may need same-day advice.
