When to worry about a breast lump with breast cancer in men

Any new, changing, or persistent breast lump should be reviewed promptly when breast cancer in men is known or suspected. Breast Lump is a very common presentation of Breast Cancer in Men, but a lump can also come from infection, injury, medication effects, or other tissue changes. The appearance or feel cannot confirm its cause.

A clinician may assess the lump, nipple, skin, and lymph nodes near the breast. Depending on the findings, imaging or a biopsy may be considered. Tell the team whether the lump is behind the nipple, whether it is enlarging or fixed, and whether there is nipple inversion, discharge, skin change, or an armpit swelling. Previous surgery or treatment can also alter the tissue.

Contact your breast or oncology service and describe the change without waiting for it to become painful. Record when it began and any related symptoms. Avoid squeezing or repeatedly checking the area. Continue prescribed treatment unless your clinician directs otherwise, and take your medicine list to the assessment so possible treatment effects can be considered.

Seek urgent advice for rapid enlargement, spreading redness or warmth, fever, chills, pus-like drainage, severe pain, heavy bleeding, sudden breathlessness, or faintness. These signs may point to infection or another urgent problem and need prompt assessment. Follow the after-hours instructions provided by your care team.

Ask which tests may be useful, whether the lump could be linked to treatment or another condition, how quickly it should be assessed, and which symptoms should lead to an urgent call.
