When to worry about a breast lump with fibroadenoma

A fibroadenoma is a non-cancerous solid breast growth that often feels smooth, firm, and mobile under the skin. It may be painless, although tenderness can occur. Its feel and movement are not enough to confirm the diagnosis; an examination and sometimes imaging or tissue sampling help distinguish it from other breast changes.

Follow the review plan given when the fibroadenoma was diagnosed. If the diagnosis is uncertain, the lump is new, or your records are unavailable, arrange an appointment. Keep a simple note of its size or feel and any relation to your menstrual cycle. Avoid repeatedly checking it, which can make the area sore.

Contact a clinician promptly if the lump enlarges, becomes fixed, develops persistent pain, or is joined by skin dimpling, nipple inversion, unusual discharge, or an armpit lump. Fever, spreading redness, or feeling acutely unwell points to a possible infection and needs prompt care as well.

Ask how the diagnosis was confirmed, whether monitoring or removal is appropriate, and when the next examination should occur. Ask how pregnancy, breastfeeding, or hormonal medicines might affect the lump and which changes should be reported early.
