When to worry about a breast lump with a breast cyst

A breast cyst is a fluid-filled sac that may feel smooth, round, or movable. It can become tender or more noticeable as hormone levels change, and some cysts feel firm when they are deep in the breast. Feel alone cannot reliably identify a cyst, so a clinician may use imaging to tell fluid from a solid area.

Make an appointment for any lump you have not had assessed, or for one that does not settle or keeps returning. Note its location, tenderness, and changes over time. Wear a supportive bra if movement worsens discomfort, and use only pain relief that is suitable for you. Do not try to drain a lump yourself.

Seek prompt care if the lump grows quickly, becomes very painful, or is accompanied by redness, warmth, fever, nipple discharge, skin dimpling, or a change in the nipple. A cyst that returns after drainage, feels different from previous cysts, or remains unexplained also deserves review.

Ask whether imaging can confirm a fluid-filled cyst, whether it needs drainage, and what follow-up is appropriate. Ask what to do if it returns and which new breast or nipple changes should bring you back sooner.
