When to worry about a breast lump with breast cancer

A cancer-related lump may feel firm, may be fixed rather than freely mobile, or may change the shape of the breast. It can occur with skin dimpling, nipple inversion, unusual discharge, or a change in breast size. These features do not confirm a diagnosis, and many breast lumps have other explanations. The purpose of assessment is to identify the cause safely.

Book a clinical appointment for a new lump, even if it is not painful. The clinician may ask when it appeared, examine both breasts and nearby lymph nodes, and recommend imaging. Depending on the findings, a tissue sample may be discussed. Bring information about prior breast problems, family history, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any medicines or hormones.

Seek prompt review for a lump that is enlarging, remains after a menstrual cycle, or comes with skin puckering, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or an armpit swelling. Arrange urgent help for severe illness, rapidly increasing swelling, or marked redness and fever. Do not wait for pain: breast cancer can present without tenderness.
