When to worry about a breast lump with a breast abscess

A breast abscess is a collection of infected fluid that can form a tender, swollen area. The skin may feel hot, look red, or become shiny, and the lump can feel softer in the centre or firm around its edges. Breastfeeding, a blocked duct, or an infection entering through broken skin can be involved, but an examination is needed to distinguish an abscess from other causes of a lump.

Arrange a same-day or prompt appointment, particularly if pain, redness, or swelling is increasing. A clinician may examine the breast and use imaging to assess the area. Treatment can include antibiotics and draining infected fluid; do not squeeze, pierce, or repeatedly press the lump. Keep any skin break clean and mention breastfeeding, pregnancy, recent procedures, or nipple discharge.

Get urgent help if you feel faint or severely unwell, have a high fever or shaking chills, see rapidly spreading redness, or notice red streaking from the breast. Prompt review is also needed when symptoms do not start improving with treatment, the lump remains, or the nipple becomes pulled inward. These signs require assessment because infection can spread and a persistent lump may need a different evaluation.

Ask whether the lump needs imaging or drainage, how to take any prescribed medicine, and whether breastfeeding or expressing milk should continue. Ask what changes should trigger another visit and when the breast should be rechecked after treatment.
