When to worry about bone pain with spinal cord compression

Spinal cord compression can cause persistent back or neck pain, pain that travels around the body or into a limb, and symptoms that worsen with coughing, movement, or lying down. Pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots may also affect strength, sensation, coordination, or bladder and bowel function. Pain alone has several possible causes, but neurological changes make the situation time-sensitive.

If you have a known or suspected compression, follow the urgent plan from your medical team. Report a new pain pattern immediately, including pain that is stronger at night or prevents comfortable movement. Do not drive yourself if weakness, numbness, poor balance, or severe pain is present. Keep a list of medicines and bring it to the assessment if safe to do so.

Go to emergency care now for new or worsening leg or arm weakness, numbness, difficulty standing or walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, or inability to pass urine. Severe spinal pain, rapidly spreading symptoms, or loss of coordination also needs immediate attention. Do not wait for a routine appointment because nerve function can change quickly.

Ask which symptoms require an emergency call, what movement is safe, and whether you need urgent imaging. Ask how pain will be treated, how medicines should be taken, and who is available after hours if symptoms change.
