When to worry about bone pain with cancer pain

Cancer pain may involve bone, nearby tissues, nerves, or more than one source. It can feel aching, sharp, burning, or pressure-like, and its pattern may change with movement or treatment. Pain that returns before the next dose, interrupts sleep, or limits normal activity gives your team information for reassessment.

Use a simple record of the site, severity, timing, triggers, sleep impact, and relief from each prescribed medicine. Take medicines only as directed, and ask before adding non-prescription products. Contact the cancer or pain team if you need extra doses, cannot move comfortably, or the agreed plan is no longer helping enough.

Get urgent medical help for sudden severe pain with a fall, snap, deformity, or inability to use a limb. Seek rapid advice for new weakness, numbness, confusion, severe drowsiness, difficulty breathing, or loss of bladder or bowel control. A fever with a sudden deterioration also warrants urgent assessment.
