When to Worry About Blurred Vision With Hypertension

Do not drive yourself if your sight is impaired. A sudden change can affect your ability to travel safely and may need rapid assessment.

Blurred vision is a common presentation of Hypertension. High blood pressure can place strain on small blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye, and can also affect blood flow to the brain or other organs.

Blurred sight may also have unrelated causes, such as an eye-surface problem, a change in glasses prescription, migraine, low blood sugar, or a medicine effect. The timing, whether one or both eyes are affected, and any accompanying symptoms help a clinician assess the cause.

Stop the activity that requires clear sight and sit somewhere safe. If you have a home blood-pressure monitor, take a reading after resting quietly and record the result, the time, and your symptoms. Do not take an extra dose or stop prescribed blood-pressure medicine unless a clinician tells you to.

Arrange prompt medical advice for new, recurring, or unexplained blurred vision, even if it improves. An assessment may include a blood-pressure check, an eye examination, a review of medicines, and checks for other symptoms.

Call emergency services immediately if the vision change starts suddenly, is severe, affects one side of your view, or occurs with facial drooping, arm or leg weakness, numbness, confusion, fainting, difficulty speaking, loss of balance, or a severe headache.

Urgent help is also needed for blurred vision with chest pain, marked breathlessness, repeated vomiting, or a seizure. These combinations can signal a time-sensitive problem, so do not wait for the symptom to settle.

If the change is mild but persists or keeps returning without these warning signs, contact a doctor or eye-care professional promptly. Seek care sooner if you are pregnant, have diabetes, kidney disease, or a previous stroke.

Ask what might be causing the change, whether both eyes need examination, and whether your blood-pressure treatment or another medicine could contribute. Tell the clinician when the blurring began, how long it lasted, what you were doing, and whether it affected one eye or both.

Bring a list of medicines and recent blood-pressure readings if available. Ask which symptoms should prompt emergency help and when your blood pressure and vision should be checked again.
