When to worry about blurred vision with dry eye

Tears create a smooth surface over the cornea. When tears evaporate quickly or are not produced adequately, that surface becomes irregular and vision may fluctuate, often improving after blinking. Gritty eyes, burning, watering, or contact-lens discomfort can occur at the same time. Persistent or one-sided blur may have a different cause, including a corneal problem, infection, or an issue inside the eye.

Take breaks from screens, blink fully, avoid direct air from fans or air-conditioning, and use lubricating drops recommended by a pharmacist or eye professional. Remove contact lenses if they feel uncomfortable and do not drive while vision is unclear. Book an examination if simple measures do not settle the blur or if it keeps returning.

Seek same-day care for sudden loss of vision, severe eye pain, marked redness, injury, new flashes, a sudden shower of floaters, or a dark curtain or shadow. A headache with weakness, facial drooping, speech trouble, or confusion also needs emergency help. Do not wait for lubricating drops to work when these warning signs occur.
