Short answer

If you have kidney cancer, contact your cancer care team promptly about any new, worsening, or persistent blood in urine; seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, clots, inability to pass urine, severe pain, dizziness, or faintness.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What blood in urine can mean

Blood in Urine is a very common presentation of Kidney Cancer. It may appear pink, red, or brown, or it may only be found on a urine test. The amount you can see does not reliably show how serious the cause is. In someone already diagnosed with kidney cancer, bleeding can relate to the tumour or to another urinary problem, such as infection, a stone, irritation, or a treatment effect. Your clinician may need to check the urine, blood counts, kidney function, and scans to identify the cause and decide what support is needed.

What to do next

Tell your oncology or urology team when the bleeding began, whether it is visible, whether clots are present, and whether it comes and goes. Mention pain, fever, burning when passing urine, reduced urine, weakness, or new swelling. Keep taking prescribed medicines unless your treating clinician tells you otherwise, and ask specifically about blood thinners, antiplatelet medicines, or supplements before changing anything. Bring a list of medicines and note any recent procedure or treatment.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical help if bleeding is heavy or continuous, you pass clots that may block urine flow, or you cannot urinate. Go urgently as well for severe or rapidly increasing pain, fever with chills, marked weakness, confusion, dizziness, or fainting. These signs can indicate blockage, infection, significant blood loss, or another problem needing rapid assessment. If symptoms are milder but the blood returns or does not settle, contact your care team without waiting for the next routine appointment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what may be causing the bleeding in your situation, whether you need urine or blood tests, and whether imaging or a procedure is needed. You can also ask which symptoms should send you straight to an emergency department, whether any medicine could worsen bleeding, and whom to call outside clinic hours.

Questions people ask

Should I wait if the blood in my urine stops?

No. Tell your cancer care team even if the bleeding stops, especially if it returns or is a new symptom.

Can treatment or medicines affect bleeding?

They can be relevant, so give your clinician a complete list of medicines, supplements, and recent procedures before making changes.
