When to worry about blood in urine if you have benign prostatic hyperplasia

An enlarged prostate can have fragile blood vessels and may bleed, especially with straining or irritation. Urinary infection, stones, kidney disease, medicines, and cancers of the urinary tract can also cause haematuria. Burning, fever, flank pain, clots, or a weak stream add useful clues but do not establish the cause.

Contact a doctor or urology team and describe the colour, timing, amount, clots, pain, fever, and urinary flow. Bring a list of medicines, including blood thinners. Do not alter prescribed treatment yourself. Assessment may include a urine test, blood tests, examination, or imaging depending on your symptoms.

Seek urgent care for inability to pass urine, large clots, heavy or ongoing bleeding, faintness, confusion, severe pain, fever with chills, or vomiting. A blocked bladder can damage the urinary system, while infection with obstruction needs prompt treatment.

Ask whether the bleeding fits prostate enlargement, whether a urine culture or scan is needed, how blood thinners affect the plan, and what to do if your stream suddenly worsens.
