When to worry about bleeding in early pregnancy with cervical ectropion

What cervical ectropion can do

Cervical ectropion means delicate cells from inside the cervical canal are visible on the outer cervix. These cells can bleed more easily, including after sex or an examination. This can explain light spotting, but it does not rule out other pregnancy-related causes. The colour, amount, timing, and accompanying symptoms help a clinician decide how quickly you need review.

Contact your pregnancy-care team to report the bleeding and describe its amount, colour, onset, and whether it followed sex. Use a pad so you can observe the flow, and avoid inserting anything into the vagina until a clinician gives you guidance. Keep any appointment offered, because assessment may include questions, an examination, and pregnancy checks.

When to seek urgent care

Get urgent help for heavy or worsening bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, faintness, marked weakness, fever, or feeling suddenly very unwell. These symptoms need prompt assessment in pregnancy and should not be attributed to cervical ectropion without review. If you cannot reach your maternity team, use local emergency services.
