When to worry about bleeding between periods with uterine fibroids

Fibroids are growths in the muscle of the uterus. Depending on their size and position, they can change the shape of the uterine cavity or affect the lining, leading to spotting or bleeding outside the expected menstrual days. Bleeding can also have other causes, including pregnancy-related changes, infection, hormonal shifts, polyps, or changes in the cervix. The pattern alone cannot identify the cause.

Record when the bleeding starts, how long it lasts, whether it follows sex, and whether you have cramps, pelvic pressure, dizziness, or unusual discharge. Arrange a clinical review if the pattern is new, keeps returning, or occurs after your periods had become predictable. A clinician may ask about medicines and pregnancy possibility, examine you, and suggest tests or imaging based on your symptoms.

Seek urgent medical help if bleeding is heavy or rapidly increasing, you feel faint or unusually weak, have severe or one-sided pelvic pain, develop fever, or could be pregnant. These warning signs need prompt assessment even when fibroids are already known. Do not wait for a routine appointment if you are soaking through protection repeatedly or cannot stay safely hydrated.

Ask whether the fibroid’s position could explain the bleeding, which examination or scan is appropriate, and how to track changes. You can also ask what symptoms should trigger urgent care and whether treatment is needed if bleeding affects daily activities.
