When to worry about bleeding after sex with chlamydia

Chlamydia can inflame the cervix, making it more likely to bleed with contact during sex. It may also cause unusual discharge, burning when urinating, lower abdominal pain, or no symptoms at all. Bleeding after sex has other possible causes, so a test is needed rather than relying on symptoms. Untreated infection can move higher into the reproductive tract and cause more serious pelvic symptoms.

Arrange a sexual-health or primary-care appointment for testing. Avoid sex until a clinician tells you it is safe after treatment, and make sure recent partners receive appropriate advice and testing. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and do not share it. Ask whether testing for other sexually transmitted infections is suitable. If symptoms do not settle after treatment, return for review.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening lower abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, faintness, or feeling acutely unwell. Arrange prompt assessment if you are pregnant or might be pregnant and have bleeding or pelvic pain. These symptoms can signal an infection needing immediate treatment or another urgent cause of bleeding.
