When to worry about bleeding after sex with cervical ectropion

With cervical ectropion, delicate cells from inside the cervical canal are visible on the outer surface of the cervix. These cells can bleed with contact during sex or an examination and may also produce extra mucus. Ectropion is a benign finding, but the same symptom can occur with infection, polyps, or other cervical changes. A clinician may examine the cervix and test for infection before attributing the bleeding to ectropion.

Arrange a routine appointment if the bleeding keeps returning, begins after a period without symptoms, or is affecting sex or daily life. Note the timing, amount, colour, pain, discharge, menstrual stage, contraception, and pregnancy possibility. Avoid vaginal douching and do not start an over-the-counter vaginal treatment without advice. If ectropion has already been confirmed, ask whether observation is appropriate or whether treatment should be discussed.

Seek urgent care if bleeding is heavy, you feel dizzy or faint, or you have severe pelvic pain, fever, or worsening unpleasant-smelling discharge. Arrange prompt assessment for bleeding after menopause or during pregnancy. These situations need their own evaluation even when ectropion has been seen before.

Ask how the ectropion was identified, whether your cervical screening is up to date, and whether infection testing is needed. If symptoms continue, ask about options such as monitoring or a procedure, expected aftercare, and when sexual activity can be comfortable again.
