When to worry about bleeding after sex with cervical dysplasia

Cervical dysplasia means that some cells on the cervix look abnormal. The cervix may bleed with contact, although dysplasia can also cause no symptoms. Bleeding after sex may instead come from irritation, infection, a polyp, or another cervical or vaginal change. An abnormal screening result does not by itself explain every episode, so your clinician may need to examine the cervix and review your screening or biopsy history.

Book an appointment with the clinician managing your cervical health if bleeding returns, occurs outside sex, or comes with discharge or pelvic discomfort. Bring details about your last screening test, biopsy, treatment, menstrual timing, and any chance of pregnancy. Use pads if needed to observe the amount, and avoid douching. Keep scheduled follow-up even if the bleeding settles.

Get urgent help for bleeding that is heavy, continues despite rest, or is accompanied by faintness, marked weakness, severe pain, or fever. Contact your clinic promptly after a cervical biopsy or treatment if bleeding is more than you were told to expect. These warning signs need assessment based on what is happening now, not on the fact that dysplasia is often found during screening.

Ask whether your result was low-grade or high-grade, whether a recent procedure could explain the blood, and whether you need an examination, infection testing, or repeat cervical assessment. Clarify what amount of bleeding is expected after any planned treatment and whom to call outside office hours.
