When to worry about black stools with gastritis

Black Stools is a common presentation of Gastritis. Irritation of the stomach lining can sometimes bleed, and blood altered during digestion may make stool look black and sticky rather than simply dark brown. Iron tablets, bismuth medicines, and some foods can also darken stool, so appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Pay attention to whether the stool is tar-like, has a strong unusual smell, or keeps recurring. Gastritis-related bleeding may occur with upper abdominal discomfort, nausea, or burning, but significant bleeding can develop without severe pain.

Stop and check any new medicines or supplements that could change stool colour, but do not dismiss genuinely tarry stool as a medicine effect. Contact a clinician promptly for advice, and tell them about aspirin, anti-inflammatory painkillers, blood thinners, iron, and bismuth use. Do not take extra anti-inflammatory painkillers while waiting.

If you feel light-headed, unusually tired, breathless, or unsteady, have someone stay with you and avoid driving. Keep a note of when the colour changed and whether it happened more than once.

Go to an emergency department now if black stools are accompanied by fainting, confusion, cold clammy skin, rapid breathing, severe weakness, vomiting blood, or coffee-ground vomit. Seek same-day medical assessment for repeated black stools, worsening abdominal pain, or a history of ulcers or digestive bleeding. These signs can indicate ongoing blood loss and need examination.

Ask whether your medicines could be irritating the stomach, whether you need a blood count or stool assessment, and how to manage gastritis while bleeding is being considered. Mention the stool texture, associated symptoms, and any previous episode.
