When to worry about arm numbness and tingling with cervical radiculopathy

Cervical Radiculopathy occurs when a nerve leaving the neck is irritated or compressed. Pain, tingling, altered sensation, or weakness may travel from the neck or shoulder into the arm and hand. Coughing, sneezing, or certain neck positions can sometimes change the symptoms.

The affected fingers and movements can help a clinician identify the nerve involved, but they do not replace an examination. Symptoms that steadily worsen, remain present at rest, or interfere with arm use should be reviewed.

Avoid positions that clearly trigger arm symptoms, change posture regularly, and keep a brief record of pain, tingling, numbness, and specific weak movements. Use only medicines or exercises that are suitable for you and have been advised by a healthcare professional.

A clinician may assess neck movement, sensation, reflexes, and strength. Further testing or physiotherapy may be considered when the pattern persists or the examination suggests a need.

Seek emergency help for sudden one-sided weakness or numbness with facial drooping, speech difficulty, severe dizziness, chest discomfort, or breathing problems. Seek urgent assessment for rapidly increasing weakness, trouble walking, loss of hand coordination, or new difficulty controlling bladder or bowel function.

Arrange prompt medical review for constant numbness, worsening pain despite rest, or weakness that makes lifting, writing, buttoning clothes, or reaching difficult. Do not drive if weakness or altered sensation makes vehicle control unsafe.
