When should you worry about abdominal pain if you have threadworms?

Threadworms commonly cause itching around the anus, often worse at night. Mild tummy discomfort can occur, but marked or ongoing abdominal pain should not be attributed to worms without review. Other explanations may include constipation, infection, or a problem unrelated to the infestation. In children, watch drinking, eating, energy, and bowel habits as well as the pain.

Speak with a pharmacist or clinician about suitable treatment, especially for young children, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Wash hands after using the toilet and before food, keep fingernails short, shower or bathe in the morning, and wash sleepwear and bedding. Treating household members may be advised, so follow local instructions rather than sharing medicine.

Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening pain, a swollen or hard abdomen, repeated vomiting, fever, blood in stool, faintness, unusual sleepiness, or inability to drink. Arrange a review when pain lasts despite worm treatment, keeps returning, or comes with weight loss or persistent bowel change.
