When to worry about abdominal pain with gastritis

Gastritis is irritation or inflammation of the stomach lining. It can cause burning or aching in the upper abdomen, nausea, early fullness, or discomfort after eating. Pain that is new, severe, persistent, or different from your usual symptoms should not be assumed to be gastritis, particularly when there are signs of bleeding or dehydration.

Choose smaller meals, avoid alcohol and foods that clearly worsen symptoms, and drink fluids regularly. Review painkillers and other medicines with a clinician rather than stopping a prescribed treatment yourself. Arrange an appointment if symptoms keep returning, disturb sleep, or do not improve, because the cause may need testing and targeted treatment.

Seek emergency help for vomiting blood or material resembling coffee grounds, black sticky stools, severe or rapidly worsening pain, fainting, confusion, chest pressure, or difficulty breathing. Obtain prompt medical advice for repeated vomiting, inability to drink, marked weakness, or unexplained weight loss. These signs need assessment rather than home treatment.

Ask whether a medicine, infection, ulcer, or another condition could be contributing, whether testing is needed, and which pain relief is safest for you. Mention bleeding, vomiting, alcohol use, regular medicines, and when symptoms relate to meals.
