When to worry about abdominal pain with diverticular disease

Diverticular disease can cause discomfort when small pouches in the bowel become irritated. Pain may be felt low in the abdomen and can occur with bloating or a change in bowel habit. A new pattern, pain that steadily intensifies, or tenderness that makes movement difficult may indicate inflammation or a complication. Abdominal pain has several possible causes, so the pattern alone cannot confirm the reason.

Note where the pain is, when it began, whether it comes in waves, and whether passing stool or gas changes it. Drink small amounts regularly if you can, choose gentle foods, and rest. Do not take leftover antibiotics. A clinician can decide whether you need an examination, blood tests, or imaging, particularly when symptoms are new or different from your usual pattern.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, a hard or markedly swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, faintness, confusion, or blood in the stool. Arrange prompt medical advice for fever, chills, ongoing tenderness, or pain that does not settle. If you feel seriously unwell, use local emergency services.

Ask whether this episode could be diverticulitis, which warning signs should prompt reassessment, and whether your medicines or bowel routine need review. Tell the clinician about previous episodes, constipation or diarrhoea, bleeding, and any recent treatment.
