When should you worry about Braxton Hicks?

Short answer
You should contact your maternity team about Braxton Hicks if tightenings become regular, painful, stronger, or closer together, or if they occur with bleeding, leaking fluid, reduced movements, or severe pain.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the tightenings
Braxton Hicks are practice tightenings of the womb. They can feel like the abdomen is briefly becoming firm and may ease after rest, hydration or a change of activity. They do not always follow a predictable pattern. Because early labour can begin differently from one pregnancy to another, the pattern, intensity and associated symptoms matter more than the name of the sensation.
What you can monitor
Pause and note when each tightening starts, how long it lasts and whether the intervals are becoming shorter. Rest on your side, drink water and empty your bladder if you can. Keep your maternity unit’s contact details available. If you are unsure whether the tightenings are practice contractions or labour, call for individual advice rather than trying to diagnose the pattern yourself.
When to seek urgent maternity care
Contact your maternity team promptly for vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking or a sudden gush, severe or constant abdominal pain, fever, faintness, or a clear reduction in your baby’s usual movements. Seek urgent help if you feel very unwell or cannot reach the maternity service. If you are before the expected stage of pregnancy and think labour may be starting, call immediately.
Questions for your maternity team
Ask how your unit defines a regular contraction pattern, which number to call at any hour, how to report reduced movements, and what to bring if you are asked to attend. Mention previous births, pregnancy complications, bleeding, fluid loss and any advice already given.

Questions people ask
Can Braxton Hicks be painful?
They can be uncomfortable or sometimes painful, but increasing strength, regularity or accompanying symptoms should be discussed with your maternity team.
Can rest stop Braxton Hicks?
Practice tightenings may ease with rest, hydration or a position change, but this does not rule out labour if the pattern continues or changes.
