When should you see a doctor about white patches on skin?

A lighter area may reflect reduced pigment, complete loss of pigment, or surface scale that changes how light reflects. Possibilities include hypopigmentation, pityriasis alba, tinea versicolor, idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis, and vitiligo. Lichen sclerosus can affect genital or nearby skin and needs medical review. These conditions can look alike in photographs, so a clinician may inspect the surface and surrounding skin closely.

A patch that is smooth and stable is different from one that is inflamed, flaky, or rapidly enlarging. Record changes rather than assuming that every pale mark has the same cause.

Photograph the patches in daylight, record when you first noticed them, and note itching, scale, soreness, new products, infections, or sun exposure. Use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser, avoid scratching, and do not use steroid, antifungal, or bleaching products without advice. Sun protection can reduce contrast between affected and unaffected skin.

Tell the clinician whether hair in the area has also changed colour and whether similar patches occur in your mouth, eyes, or genital area. That detail can help guide the examination and treatment plan.

Arrange prompt care if a patch spreads quickly, becomes very itchy or painful, cracks, bleeds, forms blisters, or is associated with swelling or fever. Genital soreness, fragile skin, or trouble urinating should be assessed promptly. Facial swelling or breathing difficulty requires emergency care.
