When should you see a doctor about urinary urgency?

Urgency is a strong need to urinate that can arrive quickly, sometimes with frequency or leakage. Irritation of the bladder, a urinary tract infection, or inflammation of the prostate can cause it. Benign prostatic hyperplasia may also affect flow and leave urine in the bladder, creating repeated trips to the toilet. The pattern, associated symptoms, and examination help separate these possibilities.

Keep a short bladder diary showing drinks, toilet visits, urgency episodes, leakage, and night-time waking. Note burning, pelvic discomfort, discharge, fever, or a change in the stream. Avoid abruptly restricting fluids, because concentrated urine can irritate the bladder. Bring a list of medicines and supplements to the appointment.

Arrange prompt medical care for fever, chills, back or side pain, blood in the urine, vomiting, or feeling very unwell. Seek emergency help if you cannot pass urine, develop severe pain, or become confused.
