When should you see a doctor about shoulder weakness?

Short answer
See a doctor about shoulder weakness if it is new, worsening, follows an injury, limits ordinary movement, or comes with numbness, severe pain, or loss of function.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Book an appointment
- New, persistent, worsening, or injury-related weakness deserves assessment.
- Seek urgent help
- Act quickly for deformity, a cold or numb hand, or sudden weakness with neurological or chest symptoms.
What shoulder weakness may indicate
Weakness may be felt as difficulty lifting the arm, reaching overhead, carrying an object, or controlling the arm while lowering it. A tendon problem such as a rotator cuff tear can affect lifting. Neck nerve irritation, including cervical radiculopathy, may cause weakness with tingling or pain travelling into the arm. A shoulder that repeatedly slips, catches, or feels unreliable may reflect shoulder instability. The symptom alone cannot identify the cause.
What to do while waiting
Stop the movement that triggers weakness and avoid heavy overhead work. Keep the elbow and wrist moving gently if this does not increase pain, and use a comfortable supported position for rest. Note when the weakness began, which movements are affected, and whether neck pain, tingling, swelling, or bruising appeared. Do not force the shoulder back into place or begin strenuous strengthening before an examination.
When care is urgent
Seek urgent medical care after a fall or blow if the shoulder looks out of place, the arm cannot be moved, or the hand becomes cold, pale, blue, numb, or unusually weak. Sudden shoulder or arm weakness with chest pressure, breathlessness, sweating, facial drooping, speech trouble, or weakness elsewhere needs emergency help. Arrange a prompt appointment for progressive weakness, night pain, fever, or symptoms that are not settling.
Useful questions for your doctor
Ask which movements and strength tests will help identify the source, whether the neck and nerves need assessment, and whether imaging is appropriate. Ask when gentle rehabilitation can begin and which activities should be avoided. If a tendon injury is suspected, ask whether rotator cuff repair is relevant and what non-surgical options may be tried first.

Questions people ask
Can shoulder weakness improve on its own?

What should I record before the appointment?
Record the start date, triggering event, affected movements, pain location, and any tingling, swelling, bruising, or neck symptoms.
