When should you see a doctor about shoulder popping and clicking?

Short answer
See a doctor about shoulder popping and clicking when the sound is painful, follows an injury, comes with weakness or instability, or restricts movement, and seek urgent care if the shoulder is dislocated or the arm becomes numb or cold.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Usually monitor briefly
- A sound without pain, weakness, injury, or movement loss
- Arrange care
- Painful clicking, slipping, weakness, or restricted movement
What the sound may indicate
A click can come from tendons or other tissues moving as the shoulder changes position, and a sound without pain or loss of function is often less concerning. Painful catching, repeated slipping, or a sense that the shoulder may come out can occur with Shoulder Instability or a Shoulder Labral Tear. Altered shoulder-blade movement may fit Scapular Dyskinesis, while stiffness and grinding can accompany Shoulder Osteoarthritis. The sound alone cannot identify the cause.
What to do before assessment
Avoid the position that reliably causes painful catching or slipping, and do not repeatedly force the shoulder to click. Keep comfortable daily movement, note whether the sound occurs during lifting or rotation, and record pain, weakness, injury, or swelling. A clinician may compare both shoulders, assess the shoulder blade and stability, and decide whether rehabilitation or imaging is appropriate.
When popping needs prompt care
Seek urgent help if the shoulder looks out of place, cannot move after an injury, or the arm becomes numb, pale, or cold. Arrange an appointment when popping is painful, frequent and worsening, associated with weakness or repeated slipping, or accompanied by reduced movement or night discomfort.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the sound comes from the joint, tendon, or shoulder blade; whether instability or a labral problem needs assessment; and which strengthening or movement limits are sensible.

Questions people ask
Is shoulder clicking without pain always a problem?
Not necessarily. A painless sound with normal strength and movement is less concerning, but new or changing symptoms should be assessed if they develop.
What should you do if the shoulder slips out?
Keep the arm still and seek urgent medical help; do not try to force the joint back into place yourself.
