When should you see a doctor about ringing in the ears?

Tinnitus is hearing a ringing, buzzing, humming, or other sound without an outside source. It may be noticed in one or both ears and can vary with noise exposure, medicines, ear blockage, or hearing changes. Earwax buildup can muffle sound and contribute to tinnitus; labyrinthitis and Meniere's disease can involve ringing alongside balance or hearing symptoms. Ringing alone does not establish any particular diagnosis.

Protect your ears from loud sound, but avoid complete silence if it makes the noise more intrusive; gentle background sound may help. Record whether the ringing is one-sided, pulse-like, intermittent, or constant, and note hearing loss, dizziness, pain, discharge, and recent medicines. Do not put objects into the ear. A clinician can decide whether ear wax removal or another assessment is appropriate.

Seek urgent assessment for ringing that starts suddenly with sudden hearing loss, severe vertigo, facial weakness, a severe headache, or new neurological symptoms. Get prompt care after a significant head injury or when the sound beats in time with your pulse. These warning signs should not be explained away as simple tinnitus.

Ask whether your ears need examination, whether hearing should be tested, and whether a medicine or recent noise exposure could contribute. Ask what changes should trigger urgent review and which sound or sleep strategies are suitable for you.
