When should you see a doctor about receding hairline?

A dermatologist can examine the hairline, temples and scalp, ask about timing and family history, and distinguish pattern hair loss from causes related to inflammation, tension or other health changes.

Gradual temple recession can occur with androgenetic alopecia, also called male pattern hair loss. Hairline loss can also occur with repeated pulling from tight hairstyles or extensions, known as traction alopecia.

A receding front hairline with itching, pain, redness, scaling, bumps, or loss of eyebrow hair deserves assessment because frontal fibrosing alopecia can affect the hairline and may cause scarring. These patterns are not diagnosed from appearance alone.

Take clear photographs of the front, temples and top of the scalp in similar lighting, and note when you first noticed a change. Bring a list of medicines, supplements, recent illnesses, major stressors, hair procedures and styling habits.

Until you are assessed, avoid hairstyles that pull at the hairline and handle thinning areas gently. Do not start a prescription hair-loss treatment without discussing whether it is suitable for you; treatment choices depend on the cause, medical history and pregnancy considerations.

Arrange prompt medical care if recession develops over a short time, occurs in sharply defined patches, or comes with scalp pain, marked redness, swelling, pus, crusting or intense itch. Seek help sooner if eyelashes or eyebrows are also thinning, or if the skin at the hairline looks shiny or scarred.

These changes do not identify one diagnosis by themselves, but they can signal inflammation or damage that may need early treatment. A dermatologist may use a magnified scalp examination and, when appropriate, tests to clarify the cause.

Ask what pattern of hair loss is present, whether the scalp shows inflammation or scarring, and whether any medicines or tests are needed. You can also ask which options aim to slow loss, what improvement is realistic, and when progress should be reviewed.
