When Should You See a Doctor About Muscle Soreness After Exercise?

Short answer
See a doctor when muscle soreness after exercise is severe, follows an injury, prevents normal movement, keeps worsening, or does not begin settling with rest; seek urgent care for dark urine, marked swelling, or profound weakness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Soreness versus injury
Delayed soreness can follow a new exercise, increased training load, or movements that challenge muscles in a different way. A muscle strain can present with sudden local pain during activity, tenderness, swelling, or reduced strength. Tendinopathy can present with pain near a tendon that builds with repeated loading. Rhabdomyolysis is an uncommon but serious muscle breakdown problem that can present with severe muscle pain, weakness, swelling, or dark urine.
How to manage it initially
Pause the exercise that triggered the pain and use gentle daily movement if it does not increase symptoms. Hydrate normally, sleep adequately, and return to training gradually when strength and movement are comfortable. Avoid deep massage or intense stretching over a freshly injured area. Note the exercise, onset, affected muscles, swelling, weakness, urine colour, and any medicines or supplements used.
Warning signs needing prompt care
Seek urgent care for dark or tea-coloured urine, very little urine, rapidly increasing swelling, severe weakness, confusion, faintness, or difficulty breathing. Arrange prompt assessment for a popping sensation, bruising, a visible muscle change, inability to use the limb normally, or pain that is disproportionate to the workout.
Questions for assessment
Does this pattern fit ordinary post-exercise soreness, a muscle strain, or tendon irritation? When can I resume training, and which movements should I avoid? Do my symptoms require tests to check muscle or kidney stress?
