When should you see a doctor about loss of taste?

Taste may seem reduced because nasal congestion prevents aromas reaching the smell receptors, while some medicines, mouth problems, viral illnesses, and nerve changes can also contribute. A common cold can temporarily alter taste. COVID-19 can do this as well, and symptoms that continue after the infection may fit Long COVID. Loss of taste does not by itself identify one condition.

Note when the change began, whether smell is affected, and any blocked nose, sore throat, fever, mouth soreness, or new medicine. Drink normally, keep up gentle oral care, and avoid relying on taste to judge whether food is fresh. Do not stop prescribed medicine without advice. Arrange a routine appointment if the symptom is not settling or is interfering with meals.

Seek urgent help for loss of taste with trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Prompt assessment is also sensible if it follows a head injury or appears with new facial weakness, difficulty speaking, or one-sided numbness.

Ask whether your medicines, nasal symptoms, oral health, or a recent infection could explain the change; whether smell testing or an examination is useful; and what duration should prompt follow-up.
