When should you see a doctor about groin pain?

Short answer
See a doctor about groin pain when it is severe, follows an injury, affects walking, or does not improve with rest and gentle care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Describe the trigger
- Mention sprinting, twisting, kicking, lifting, coughing, or a direct impact.
- Do not ignore
- Severe sudden pain, a persistent bulge, fever, vomiting, or inability to walk.
What groin pain may involve
Groin pain can arise from the adductor muscles, hip joint, nearby tendons, or the abdominal wall. A sudden pain during sport may fit a Groin Strain. Pain with hip flexion or turning can occur with Hip Impingement, while catching or deep joint pain may need assessment for a Hip Labral Tear. Hip Osteoarthritis can cause groin discomfort with stiffness. Sports Hernia is another possible source in active people. A careful examination distinguishes these patterns from non-musculoskeletal causes.
What to do before review
Stop sprinting, kicking, cutting, and other movements that reproduce the pain. Keep walking only within a comfortable limit and avoid aggressive stretching in the early phase after an injury. Use a wrapped cold pack briefly if swelling or soreness follows activity. Record the exact location, the movement that started it, bruising, a bulge, hip clicking, urinary symptoms, and whether coughing changes the pain. This gives the clinician a clearer starting point.
When groin pain needs urgent care
Seek urgent care for sudden severe groin or testicular pain, a painful bulge that does not settle, inability to bear weight, a deformed hip, or an open injury. Prompt medical review is also needed for fever with redness or swelling, vomiting, abdominal pain, or rapidly worsening symptoms. If pain continues to limit sport, work, sleep, or ordinary walking, book an appointment. Sports Physiotherapy may be considered after the cause and stage of injury are assessed.
Questions to bring
Ask whether the pain is coming from the hip, adductors, abdominal wall, or another area; whether a hernia or joint assessment is needed; and which activities are safe. Ask how to rebuild strength and what warning signs should bring you back sooner.

Questions people ask
Can a groin strain heal without a doctor?
A mild strain may improve with activity modification, but persistent pain, bruising, weakness, or difficulty walking should be assessed.
Does groin pain always come from the hip?
No. Muscles, tendons, the abdominal wall, nerves, and non-musculoskeletal conditions can all cause pain in this region.
