When should you see a doctor about earache?

Earache may arise from the ear canal, middle ear, nearby sinuses, jaw, or throat. A Common Cold or Sinusitis can create pressure around the ear. Earwax Buildup may cause blocked hearing and discomfort. Middle Ear Infection often presents with ear pain, while Swimmer's Ear commonly causes pain in the ear canal, especially after water exposure.

Keep the ear dry and do not insert cotton buds, fingers, or objects into the canal. Use only pain relief that is suitable for you and follow the label directions. Do not start leftover Antibiotic Treatment; a clinician needs to identify whether infection is present and which part of the ear is affected. Note fever, discharge, recent swimming, blocked hearing, cold symptoms, and the timing of pain.

Seek urgent assessment for swelling or redness behind the ear, severe headache, marked dizziness, new facial weakness, or sudden hearing loss. Get prompt care after an object or chemical enters the ear, or if severe pain is followed by fluid or blood. Children who seem very unwell, unusually sleepy, or difficult to settle need medical review.
