When should you see a doctor about breast lump?

A breast lump can be linked to a cyst, fibroadenoma, fibrocystic breast changes, a blocked milk duct, or an abscess. Breast cancer can also present with a lump, but a lump does not diagnose cancer. A clinician may assess its position, movement, tenderness, relation to your cycle, and whether nearby lymph nodes feel enlarged.

Check whether the lump changes during your menstrual cycle, but do not delay care while waiting for a cycle to finish. Note when you first noticed it, whether it is painful, and any nipple discharge, fever, redness, or recent injury. Tell the clinician if you are breastfeeding, pregnant, taking hormones, or have a personal or family history of breast disease.

Seek prompt care for a rapidly enlarging lump, a hot red breast with fever, bloody nipple discharge, new nipple inversion, skin dimpling, or a lump in the armpit. A firm fixed lump or a change that does not settle should be assessed without delay. Testing may include examination and breast imaging, with a sample when needed.

Ask what the examination suggests, whether imaging is needed, and how soon results will be available. Ask which changes to monitor and when to return if the lump remains or develops new features.
