When should you see a doctor about blood in stool?

Short answer
See a doctor about blood in stool promptly, especially if it recurs, is heavy, makes stool black, or occurs with pain, dizziness, or a change in bowel habits.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Arrange care
- Any unexplained or recurrent bleeding
- Urgent warning
- Heavy bleeding, black stool, faintness, or severe pain
What the colour and pattern can mean
Bright red blood may come from the anus or lower bowel, including an anal fissure, while darker blood or black, tarry stool can indicate bleeding higher in the digestive tract. Infection, inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, polyps, and cancers are other possibilities. Blood does not identify the cause by itself.
What to do now
Note the colour, amount, frequency, pain, bowel changes, fever, and medicines such as blood thinners. Do not dismiss bleeding because it is painless or appears once. A clinician may examine the area and decide whether stool tests, blood tests, or further bowel assessment are needed.
When care is urgent
Seek emergency care for heavy or continuous bleeding, black tarry stool, faintness, confusion, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, or marked weakness. Arrange prompt medical assessment for any unexplained recurrence, blood mixed through stool, new constipation or diarrhoea, or unintended weight loss.
Questions to ask your doctor
Ask where the bleeding may be coming from, which medicines could worsen it, whether you need tests, and what symptoms should prompt immediate reassessment.

Questions people ask
Can a small streak of bright blood still need assessment?
Yes. A small streak can have a local cause, but a clinician should assess bleeding that is unexplained, recurrent, or accompanied by other symptoms.
Does blood in stool always mean bowel cancer?
No. Several conditions can cause it, and the bleeding pattern cannot establish a diagnosis without assessment.
