When should you see a doctor about bleeding in early pregnancy?

Light spotting can happen when the cervix is more sensitive, including with cervical ectropion, or after sex or an examination. Bleeding can also occur with miscarriage. Ectopic pregnancy is a serious possibility when bleeding occurs with one-sided lower abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, or collapse. The amount of bleeding alone cannot confirm the cause.

Contact your maternity service, doctor, or urgent care team and describe the colour, amount, timing, and any pain. Note the date of your last period, pregnancy test result, and whether you have had previous pregnancy problems. Use a pad to observe bleeding rather than inserting anything into the vagina until you have advice.

Go to emergency care for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, confusion, extreme weakness, or heavy bleeding. Get prompt assessment for fever, worsening cramps, or tissue passing from the vagina. Even mild bleeding should be reported because an examination, ultrasound, or blood tests may be needed.
