When is wound care and dressing recommended for an animal bite?

Animal teeth can puncture, crush, or tear tissue, leaving bacteria beneath the surface even when the opening looks small. A clinician may rinse and inspect the wound, remove damaged tissue, apply a suitable dressing, and decide whether other treatment is needed. Bites to the hand, face, foot, or near a joint deserve particular care because swelling or infection can affect movement and function. The animal, the circumstances, and your vaccination history may also influence the assessment.

Wash your hands, then rinse the wound with running water and mild soap if you can do so safely. Apply gentle pressure with clean material if it is bleeding and cover it with a clean dressing. Do not close a puncture wound yourself or put irritants into it. Arrange medical assessment promptly for any broken skin, especially if the animal is unknown, the bite was unprovoked, or the wound is on the hand or face. Tell the clinician when it happened and whether the animal can be identified.

Seek urgent care for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, a deep or gaping wound, loss of feeling or movement, severe pain, or a bite near the eye. Return for assessment if redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or worsening pain develops. Do not delay after a bite from an unknown or unusually behaving animal, because infection prevention and vaccination decisions may be time-sensitive.
