When Is Wet Wrap Therapy Recommended for Atopic Dermatitis?

Short answer

Wet wrap therapy is often recommended for short periods when atopic dermatitis is severely dry, inflamed, itchy, or difficult to control with moisturiser alone.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How wet wraps help

A moisturiser, and sometimes a prescribed topical medicine, is applied to the affected skin. A damp layer of clothing or bandage is placed over it, followed by a dry layer. The damp layer cools the skin, reduces scratching, and helps the surface retain moisture. It is generally used during a flare under clinical guidance, rather than as an everyday routine.

Wet wraps may be useful when itching is disrupting sleep, eczema covers several areas, or the skin feels thick and very dry. They are not suitable over untreated infection, and a clinician should advise which product goes underneath.

Using the treatment safely

Follow the plan given by your dermatologist, including the product, body areas, length of each session, and when to stop. Use clean, soft materials, avoid wrapping so tightly that circulation is affected, and keep the face and delicate areas under specific instructions. Check the skin after application for worsening redness, pain, swelling, oozing, or irritation.

Do not add a stronger topical medicine or extend the course because the rash remains itchy. Regular moisturising between sessions remains part of eczema care. See [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/) and [Wet Wrap Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/wet-wrap-therapy/) for related information.

When to contact a clinician

Seek medical advice promptly if the treated skin becomes increasingly painful, warm, swollen, crusted, or starts draining fluid, because these changes can signal infection. Contact the prescribing clinician if the rash spreads quickly, sleep remains badly disturbed, or wet wraps cause burning or a new reaction. Urgent assessment is appropriate for a severe illness with fever or marked unwellness.

Questions to ask your doctor

Ask which cream or ointment belongs under the wrap, which areas should be covered, how long each application should remain in place, and what signs mean you should stop. You can also ask how to transition back to ordinary moisturising once the flare settles.

Questions people ask

Can wet wraps replace eczema medicine?

No. They may support moisturising and prescribed treatment, but they do not replace an individual eczema plan.

Can wet wraps be used on infected eczema?

Do not cover suspected infection without medical advice; increasing pain, warmth, crusting, or drainage needs assessment.
