When is vitamin d analogue treatment recommended for psoriasis?

Vitamin D analogues are applied to affected skin and act locally on the overactive growth and inflammation associated with psoriasis. They may be used alone or combined with another topical medicine, depending on the body area and the amount of scaling. They are not the same as taking vitamin D supplements.

The scalp, face, skin folds, and genital skin can need different products or instructions because these areas are more sensitive. A clinician may avoid or adjust treatment when irritation is likely, when psoriasis is widespread, or when another treatment is more appropriate.

Use the prescribed amount and apply it only where directed. Wash your hands after application unless your hands are being treated, and keep the product away from the eyes and mucous membranes. Do not add extra applications when plaques are slow to improve. Tell the clinician about kidney problems, calcium disorders, pregnancy, or other psoriasis products so the plan can be checked for suitability.

Contact the prescriber if burning, marked redness, or worsening irritation continues, or if the treatment reaches the eyes. Seek prompt assessment for rapidly spreading redness, widespread skin pain, fever, or a sudden extensive change in psoriasis. A painful swollen joint, prolonged morning stiffness, or new difficulty moving should also be reported because psoriasis can involve joints.

Ask which plaques should receive the medicine, how much to use, whether it can be combined with a steroid or light treatment, and when improvement should be reviewed. Confirm what to do if a dose is missed and which symptoms mean the product should be paused.
