When is vaginal pessary fitting recommended for uterine prolapse?

Uterine prolapse means the womb has moved downward because the supporting pelvic tissues have weakened or stretched. A pessary is placed inside the vagina to provide internal support and may reduce the sensation of a bulge, pelvic dragging, or pressure. It does not restore the supporting tissues. Some people use one for everyday activities, while others use it while considering pelvic-floor treatment or an operation.

Describe when the pressure appears, whether you have urinary or bowel changes, and how symptoms affect walking, lifting, work, or sex. The clinician may try more than one device before finding a stable, comfortable fit. Learn how to check, remove, clean, and replace it, or arrange a schedule for clinical care if you cannot manage those steps yourself.

Arrange an assessment for new bleeding, persistent soreness, unpleasant discharge, trouble urinating, or a device that slips repeatedly. Get urgent help for severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever, or inability to pass urine. Do not force a pessary back into place if it is painful or appears to have injured the vaginal tissue.

Ask how the device will support the womb, what symptoms it may improve, and how often the fit and vaginal tissue need review. Discuss sex, exercise, dryness, removal at home, and signs that another treatment should be considered.
