When is upper endoscopy recommended for Barrett's oesophagus?

A flexible camera passes through the mouth to view the oesophagus and upper digestive tract. The clinician looks for changes in the lining and takes small tissue samples from areas that look different. A laboratory examines these biopsies for inflammation, intestinal-type changes or dysplasia, which means abnormal cells. The findings help decide whether monitoring, treatment of reflux, removal of a visible abnormal area or specialist review is appropriate.

Follow the endoscopy unit's fasting instructions and ask how to take regular medicines, especially blood thinners or diabetes medicines. Arrange transport if sedation is planned. Tell the team about swallowing difficulty, allergies, pregnancy, sleep-apnoea symptoms and previous reactions to sedation. Keep your appointment even when reflux is quiet, because surveillance is based on the oesophageal lining and biopsy findings.

Seek urgent care for vomiting blood, black stools, severe chest or abdominal pain, fainting, or sudden trouble swallowing or breathing. After endoscopy, contact the unit promptly for worsening pain, fever, repeated vomiting or bleeding rather than waiting for a routine result.
