When is tumour removal surgery recommended for thymoma?

Thymoma sits in the chest near important structures, so the team studies chest imaging and considers whether the mass has grown into nearby tissue or spread elsewhere. The operation may remove the thymus and the tumour, with removal of a small area of adjacent tissue if required. Some people receive treatment before surgery to make removal more feasible, while others need radiotherapy or medicines after surgery. Autoimmune conditions, including muscle weakness or breathing problems, also need careful management around the operation.

Tell the thoracic and oncology team about drooping eyelids, double vision, chewing or swallowing difficulty, shortness of breath, muscle fatigue and medicines for autoimmune disease. Ask whether the tumour appears removable, whether treatment before surgery is advised, and what breathing support or rehabilitation may be needed. Follow instructions about medicines and pre-operative tests, especially if weakness affects breathing or swallowing.

Seek urgent care for new or worsening breathlessness, difficulty swallowing, choking, rapidly increasing chest pain, severe weakness or inability to keep the head upright. After surgery, urgent assessment is needed for breathing trouble, chest pain, fever, heavy wound bleeding, worsening weakness or confusion.
