When is tumour removal surgery recommended for soft tissue sarcoma?

The team reviews scans, a biopsy result and the tumour's location before suggesting an operation. They consider whether it is confined to one area, whether it touches nerves, blood vessels, bone or organs, and whether the planned margin can be achieved. Surgery may be the main treatment, or it may be combined with radiotherapy or medicine before or after the operation. The aim is to remove the visible tumour and a surrounding rim of tissue when needed, while planning reconstruction or rehabilitation if movement or strength could be affected.

Ask which specialists will plan the operation and whether the biopsy and scans have been reviewed together. Discuss the expected incision, possible tissue reconstruction, hospital recovery, wound care and how the operation could affect walking, lifting or other daily activities. Tell the team about medicines, allergies and previous operations. A second opinion from a sarcoma-focused team can help clarify the options when the tumour is near an important structure.

Contact your clinical team promptly for a new or enlarging deep lump, persistent swelling, worsening pain or reduced movement. After surgery, urgent assessment is needed for heavy bleeding, rapidly increasing swelling, fever, spreading redness, severe pain, a cold or pale limb, or sudden weakness. These signs can reflect a wound problem, infection, circulation issue or pressure on a nerve.
