When Is Tumour Removal Surgery Recommended for Bile Duct Cancer?

Bile duct cancer may be located inside the liver, at the point where ducts leave the liver, or farther along the duct near the intestine. Location affects whether surgery could involve part of the liver, the bile duct, the gallbladder, or the pancreas and nearby bowel.

Specialist review uses scans, duct imaging, tissue results and an assessment of blood vessels and liver function. The team also considers whether disease has reached sites that cannot be removed safely. A drainage procedure may be needed to improve bile flow before treatment, but drainage is different from removing the cancer.

Ask your team to mark the tumour location on a scan and explain which organs or blood vessels are involved. Discuss whether the plan is curative in intent, symptom-relieving, or part of a wider treatment sequence. Bring details of jaundice, itching, weight change, medicines and prior procedures.

Before major surgery, the team may review nutrition, liver tests, fitness for anaesthesia and the possibility of needing a temporary drain. Chemotherapy or radiotherapy may be offered before or after surgery depending on the assessment.

Seek prompt medical help for fever with chills, increasing yellowing of the eyes or skin, confusion, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting or very dark urine with pale stools. These can accompany blocked or infected bile ducts and need timely assessment.
