Short answer

A travel health consultation is recommended before travel to a malaria-risk area and promptly after travel if fever or illness develops.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the consultation matters

Malaria is spread by infected mosquitoes and can become serious quickly. Risk varies with destination, season, activities, accommodation, and length of stay. A clinician can review your itinerary and health history, explain mosquito-bite prevention, and decide whether preventive medicine is appropriate. Advice may differ for pregnancy, childhood, immune conditions, or medicines already being taken.

Arrange the appointment early enough to discuss preparation and any vaccinations or prescriptions that may be relevant. Bring the countries and regions you plan to visit, travel dates, planned activities, and details of previous malaria or medication reactions.

Steps before and during travel

Use the consultation to make a personal prevention plan. Ask about covering skin, using an appropriate insect repellent, choosing screened or air-conditioned rooms, and reducing exposure when mosquitoes are active. Take prescribed preventive medicine exactly as directed and do not share it with another traveller.

After returning, tell a healthcare professional about any fever, chills, headache, unusual tiredness, muscle aches, vomiting, or diarrhoea and mention the malaria-risk destination. Symptoms can begin after you return, so keep the travel history available.

When urgent assessment is needed

Seek urgent medical assessment for fever or feeling acutely unwell during or after travel to a malaria-risk area, especially with confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, or extreme weakness. Do not wait for symptoms to settle or assume they are caused by jet lag. Tell the service where and when you travelled so malaria can be considered promptly.

Questions to ask

Ask which parts of your itinerary carry malaria risk, which bite-avoidance measures fit your trip, whether preventive medicine is suitable for you, and what symptoms should trigger urgent assessment after returning.

Questions people ask

Can malaria symptoms start after I return home?

Yes. Fever or illness after travel can need prompt assessment, so explain your recent destinations to the clinician.

Does a consultation replace mosquito-bite protection?

No. Advice about repellents, clothing, accommodation, and any prescribed prevention works alongside practical bite avoidance.
