When is travel health consultation recommended for jet lag?

Short answer
A travel health consultation is recommended when jet lag is likely to disrupt an important trip, lasts beyond expected adjustment, or is complicated by sleep, mental health or other medical needs.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why jet lag happens
Jet lag, or jet lag disorder, occurs when the body's internal clock is out of step with local time after crossing time zones. Sleep at the wrong time, daytime tiredness, poor concentration, mood changes and digestive upset can follow. Travel advice is useful when the schedule is demanding, several time zones are crossed, or regular medicines depend on a fixed timing routine.
Plan before departure
Share the route, arrival time, usual sleep pattern, work or event commitments and medicine schedule at the consultation. A clinician can help plan exposure to daylight, sleep timing, naps, meals and caffeine. Keep changes practical and avoid taking sleep medicines or supplements without checking interactions, next-day effects and whether they suit your health.
When symptoms need review
Seek prompt medical advice if confusion, severe agitation, fainting, chest pain, major breathlessness or unusual weakness is attributed to jet lag. Arrange a review when sleep disruption remains severe, mood symptoms become difficult to manage, or symptoms do not fit a travel-related sleep shift. Do not drive or operate equipment when markedly sleepy.
Questions for a travel clinician
Ask how to shift your sleep schedule, when to use daylight, how to time regular medicines across time zones, and which symptoms should prompt assessment after arrival.
