When is hydroquinone treatment recommended for dark underarms?

Underarm darkening can follow shaving, friction, deodorant irritation, inflammation, or another skin condition. Pigment treatment is less helpful if the trigger is still active, and irritation can make the area look darker. A clinician may examine the texture as well as the colour, because thick or velvety skin can point to a different cause that needs assessment.

Hydroquinone reduces pigment production in treated skin. It is not intended for broken, inflamed, infected, or recently irritated underarms. Skin-fold areas can react readily, so a tailored plan and follow-up are important.

Use only the product and schedule prescribed for your underarms. Apply a thin amount to the darker skin while avoiding cuts, mucosal skin, and the surrounding normal skin. Stop and contact the prescriber if burning, marked redness, swelling, blistering, or a persistent rash develops.

Reduce friction and pause shaving or fragranced products if they trigger irritation; your clinician can suggest gentler alternatives. Do not combine hydroquinone with exfoliating acids, retinoids, or bleaching mixtures unless the plan specifically includes them. Review is useful if the colour does not improve or becomes uneven.

Seek an assessment before treating new or rapidly spreading darkening, itch, pain, scaling, discharge, or a lump. Arrange review if both underarms and other skin folds become darker or thicker, or if the change appeared without an obvious irritant.
