When are topical corticosteroids recommended for seborrheic dermatitis?

A corticosteroid reduces inflammation, which can settle redness and itch quickly. It does not address every factor behind seborrheic dermatitis, so it is often not the only part of care. The face, ears, beard area and skin folds are sensitive sites; repeated or prolonged use there can cause unwanted skin changes. A clinician may choose another treatment for ongoing control.

Apply a thin layer only to the affected area and follow the prescribed schedule. Avoid the eyes, lips and inside of the nose unless specifically instructed. Use gentle cleansing and any recommended maintenance treatment as directed. Do not keep applying the steroid because flaking returns, and do not share the tube. Mention acne-like bumps, burning, skin colour change or worsening irritation at the next review.

Contact a clinician if the rash spreads, becomes painful, develops crusting or discharge, or does not settle with the plan. Seek prompt care for eye pain or swelling, fever, rapidly worsening redness or signs of infection. A rash that keeps returning after short courses deserves reassessment because another condition may look similar.

Ask whether an anti-inflammatory medicine is needed, how many days to use it, what maintenance treatment can reduce relapses, and which symptoms mean you should stop and call.
